Revitalizing Environment in Tribal Districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Environment Cell, P&D Department FATA organized a stakeholders’ inception workshop on the recently approved Final Phase of the “Revitalizing Environment in Tribal Districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) through Pro-poor and Pro-gender Environmental Development)” project on December 19, 2018.
The purpose of the session was to enhance the understanding of the stakeholders on the project objectives and the proposed activities of the project in their respective sectors and areas.
The session was inaugurated by the Secretary, Planning and Development Department, FATA who had graced the occasion as the chief guest for the inaugural session. The workshop was attended by the Director General, Director and Deputy Director Environment Protection Agency, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Policy Advisor and Senior Program Officer SDC Pakistan, representatives of the Line Directorates of merged Districts and concerned departments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and IUCN Pakistan. In his address the Secretary welcomed the participants and highlighted the green sector issues in the merged districts and urged the line department officials and participants for addressing all such issues including water scarcity in FATA. He further asked the relevant partners to work on reconstitution of the Project Steering Committee with the leading a role of the Secretary Environment.
Dr. Abdul Majeed of IUCN presented the background of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and IUCN Pakistan partnership for Water Governance in the merged districts. He informed that since 2014 the partnership has undertaken three different projects and this is the final one in the area. He explained the project’s objectives and the proposed activities, specifically referring to the hardcore activities of the project with respect to IWRM demonstration.
The Policy Advisor, SDC Pakistan thanked IUCN and Government institutions of Tribal districts for their active involvement in the project execution. He further extended the SDC’s support for strengthening linkages between IUCN and the Government with the other donors.
The Team Leader, Environment Cell of the “Revitalizing Environment in Tribal Districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) through Pro-poor and Pro-gender Environmental Development)” project explained the proceedings of the workshop and presented the project brief and explained the work packages of the final project.
The participating working groups analyzed the proformas developed by the Environment Cell team for formulation of Watershed Management Plans in Gomal Zam and Panjkora-Swat Rivers catchment areas, IWRM Demonstration sites selection and documentation of Natural Heritage of the tribal districts. All the participants provided valuable inputs, identified the potential sites for the respective activities and provided basic information about the proposed activities in the tribal districts. The group work’s findings were presented by the respective group leaders at the end followed by the questions and comments by the participants. At the end of the workshop the participants submitted their recommendations.
