Workshop Report Tribal Women & Natural Resource Management”– Role, Challenges & Way Forward

A Workshop on the theme “Tribal Women and National Resource Management” was organized in collaboration with Governance & Policy Program FATA project, UNWOMEN and Rule of Law Project KP – UNDP. The session was facilitated by the various partners, whereas IUCN supported the financial and logistical arrangements.

The workshop initiated with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a round of introduction all the participants. Representatives of FATA line departments, KP line departments, UN Agencies and Academia participated in the session. The list of the participants can be found in the annex section of the report. Team leader of the IUCN Environment Cell addressed the stakeholders on the aims and objectives of the workshop. He elaborated that IUCN FATA Environment Cell is conducting capacity building of the FATA line departments on various themes including gender. This is the third training in the series of gender component of the project.

The session was designed in an interactive manner in order to engage and actively involve all the participants in highlighting the tribal role of women in the natural resource management. The discussion revolved around the challenges they face, will face in times to come and suggestions on the way forward i.e. how to overcome these challenges in the future. The participants were given brief presentations on the background of the topic and on various issues pertaining to the women in particular, with respect to economic development and gender empowerment. Moreover, they were informed on the Woman Empowerment Policy in KP that was recently approved. This enabled them to have an understanding on the legal and moral support that is already available to them and thus, can make use of in terms of the economic empowerment and development in the region.

Ms. Zuhra Luqman, Gender Specialist GPP FATA, delivered a presentation on the social constraints in the light of the Economic Empowerment of Tribal Women. Umme Kalsoom, Advisor UNWOMEN delivered a presentation on the Women Empowerment Policy. At the end, Participants were divided into three groups. Each group worked on a specific theme i.e. on the role of tribal women in NRM, challenges of tribal Women while playing their respective role in NRM and way forward for tribal Women in NRM. The findings of the group work are summarized below, which were compiled by the facilitators of their respective groups.
